Media rooms are quite handy for doubling as the family game room. Because many of the requirements are similar, it s usually quite simple to design a room that is perfect for playing games, listening to music, or watching movies. With just a few simple alternations, you can create a room that is perfect for whatever leisure activities your family wishes to engage in. Here are a few helpful tips that can help you design the perfect versatile media room.

Assessing the Media Room Space

Whenever multiple uses are planned for the same living space, it s important to carefully assess the area so that it can be used in the most efficient manner. In the case of a media room, the large television and sophisticated sound system can make it the perfect location for playing video games. Enhance the room for video games by including some furniture with hidden storage. Stashing a few beanbag chairs or floor pillows in the closet can also provide additional seating for video game use. If you d also like to use the room for other kinds of games, it can take a bit of planning. Setting aside one portion of the room for table games can be a workable approach. For example, placing a table and a few chairs in one back corner of the room can provide an ample amount of comfortable space when playing card or board games. When choosing furniture pieces, steer clear of those which have large metal or glass surfaces, as these can be detrimental to the sound quality within the room. Upholstered chairs and a wooden or vinyl topped table can work well in the media room. Although most media rooms are not large enough to accommodate other kinds of gaming equipment, such as a pool table, you can certainly add one if space permits.

Making the Most of Media Room Storage Space

Storage is an important consideration when designing a combined media and game room. Depending on the kinds of games you wish to play, you might need shelves, an armoire or storage cabinet. In most cases, choosing furniture pieces that will provide hidden storage for your games is the best option. You ll also need an appropriate storage solution for DVDs, CDs, and video game cartridges. Designing adequate storage can make the media room much easier to organize, minimizing mess and clutter.

Lighting Considerations

Lighting is a very important in a media room. Planning for versatile lighting options is generally the best solution. For watching movies, ensure that all windows are equipped with light blocking shades. It s also important to position lights so that they can add a soft glow to the room without detracting from the movie viewing experience. Small lights installed in the flooring or around the lower perimeter of the room can help provide for safety when the lights are turned off. If you plan to play other games in the room, be sure to include optional light fixtures around tables. These lights can be turned on when games are being played, but switched off when the room is used for movie viewing.
