It is always nice to have cuddly pets at home. But, let s face it, there are dangers that can be brought to our home by animals. One of them can be zoonotic diseases or diseases that can be passed on from animals to humans.

These diseases are even more hazardous towards kids, pregnant women and older individuals as they are more susceptible to them because of their immune status at their ages and conditions.

Therefore, it is important that you learn of the ways to prevent these diseases from spreading in your home without having to sacrifice living without your cat.

Know what to keep away from

One way by which you can protect yourself and your family from these diseases is knowing what the infectious agents are and you can be on the lookout for them. There are several types of infections that can be derived from pets. Most of them are viral, bacterial, or parasitic conditions. But, you can only know of those that can be transmitted by cats or whatever pet you have at home.

Learn about the disease

With the help of the internet, there are a lot of things that you can know about in just a few clicks. Information about zoonotic diseases will allow you to become aware of what to expect and what you can do about the problem.

Also, the most common diseases are usually the ones that have the most information available about them. So, you can read on them as they also have the most probability of infecting humans.

Protect yourself and your pet

There are diseases that can be easily prevented by vaccines and medications that are present today. For example, if you want to avoid rabies infection, you need to have your pet vaccinated. There are also vaccines for several other conditions that are for humans.

Home safety

When you have young kids at home, you need to prevent them from getting too close with your cat. You can place your cats in their own cages when you can t be there to supervise your child. Also, you may instruct your child not to play with your cat.

Aside from keeping away, also prevent injuries. Bites and scratches can be causes of serious rabies infection and other possible conditions.

When you are cleaning up cat litter, taking extra precautions will be helpful. Then, make sure that your cat passes stools or urinates in assigned places that are different from where humans are usually at.

After touching your pet, it is standard safety procedure that you wash your hands.

Seek help from professionals

Your cat needs regular checkups with the vet. This is to ensure that it is in the prime of its health and that it won t harbor any illness which can be transferred to the members of your family living in your home.

And when your pet shows signs that it is sick, you need to be able to address the condition as soon as possible and pay a visit to your animal doctor for the necessary interventions.
