There are thousands of roads traversing this beautiful land of America. Whether it is Highway 82 to the Rockies and seeing phenomenal mountain ranges or traveling Highway 1 and watching the waves of the Pacific crash along the shore, taking a lighthouse tour along our coastlines or exploring the activities and attractions in our big cities like Chicago or Atlanta, the American road trip has more delights waiting to be enjoyed and explored than you could possibly accomplish in one lifetime! In fact, just type in the phrase” best road trips in America” in your search bar and you will find dozens of websites devoted to travel destinations. As a result, choosing your next road trip destination may be a bit of a challenge. To help out, here are some that are deemed by many to be among the elite in road trip adventures:

1. The Pacific Coast Highway is considered by many road trip enthusiasts as being the ultimate adventure in driving. Officially named Highway 1, the 130 mile stretch of road that extends from Dana Point to Oxnard is the stretch of road referred to as The Pacific Coast. However, many travelers would recommend that if you have the time, you travel its full length which is just over 1,800 miles running from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Traveling along the West Coast of America, you will pass through small towns like Carmel with its reputation of being the perfect romantic getaway location to the hustle and bustle of wharfs of San Francisco. Along the way, you will find quaint bed and breakfasts, prolific wineries, fine dining locations and quiet beaches sure to delight everyone in your group.

2. The drive from Del Rio to Alpine, TX is a 204 mile trip that is easily made in 3 4 hours and offers some of the best of the West should you be looking for deep canyons, deserts, rivers and mountains. As you make this truly Texan trip, you will want to take the time to visit the assorted small town stores and eateries to get a taste of the Texas experience. Then load up and check out great locations like the historic town of Langtry, Seminole Canyon State Park with its ancient pictographs, the views from the Pecos River High Bridge from which you can see the Mexican state of Coahuila and the convergence of the Pecos and Rio Grande and the beauty of Alpine which is rated as the #1 small town in Texas.

3. Drive the short in mileage yet long in adventure trip from Yonkers to Cold Spring, NY. This 41 mile road trip just outside The Big Apple is “must do” if you are going to be in the area. As you travel along the Hudson River via Highway 9 you will find an array of historic locations such as the Philipse Manor whose famed resident was so loyal to the English crown that General Washington had him arrested for treason; Tarrytown which was once home to Washington Irving thatm, thanks to his tome The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, is a favorite location during the fall; and the beautiful town of Cold Spring where you can gaze across the Hudson and see the renowned West Point Academy or explore the trails at Little Stony State Park.

From mountains and valleys to canyons and rivers, America has so many highways and byways that you can always find somewhere new to travel. Her big cities invigorate many and the small towns rejuvenate the weary and as you travel along you will find museums, amusement parks, waterways and roadside stands. Yes, America has much to explore. So load up and start off on a road trip adventure of your own!
