Gardening is usually enjoyed by kids if introduced and done in a less serious way. This includes using colorful buckets as their container for the plants they want to grow. Container gardening is a popular method of gardening for those who don’t have the privilege to plant on a large area. However, some gardeners just prefer to use containers as they are more accessible and require less maintenance as compared to gardening on a plot of land.

Teaching your kids how to make their bucket garden is easy and takes only a little of your time as this can be done in less than an hour. What you’ll need are:

Colorful buckets – You can buy these at any local store if you don’t have some spare for your kids to use. Let them pick their preferred colors and have as many as they want. However, starting small is the best to do when introducing gardening to your kids. Make sure that you drill a hole at the bottom of their buckets or pail. This is important as it acts as a drainage system for their bucket garden. If they want, you can let them paint their buckets with what they want. Most kids would paint animals and flowers or write their names on their containers. Writing their names will also make them feel as full owners of their own garden and this also avoids confusion if you have more than one child involved in bucket gardening.

Let your kids do the filling of their bucket as kids love playing with soil. Don’t freak out if they get messy as this would break their fun and enjoyment of the activity. If they can carry their buckets to their garden, let them be but always carefully observing their activity.

If you want them to use fertilizers, make sure that you are always observing whenever they slowly put pellets in their bucket. Keep your chemical fertilizer in a safe place where they won’t have any access with it as it is harmful to humans.

Teach them how to transfer their plants to their bucket. You can do this by showing them how you transplant one. Be sure that they are doing it properly as this is crucial to their plants growth because plants easily get stressed when handled the wrong way. You don’t want your kids to get discouraged with an unhealthy plant due to improper handling when being transplanted.

Make sure that their buckets are somewhere accessible for watering. You can also make gardening enjoyable to kids by letting them water their plants using their own watering can. Their cans should be smaller than the conventional watering cans. Show your kids how to water their plants and let them know how much and how often they need to be watered. Let them play with the water as long as there is no harm done as kids love to play with water as long as their fun doesn’t end up in accidents such as slipping on the floor.
