Although the skin of an adult may not be as delicate as a baby’s, it is still susceptible to rashes, and for a lot of cases, diaper rashes. These can be caused possibly by the feces, urine or even chemicals introduced to the skin for prolonged periods.

Here are ways that can help cope with problems with rashes.

The first thing that you need to do before you administer or try anything is to assess the area. There can be rashes which are just small patches while there can be those which are more serious cases and they almost look like lesions.

The severity of the condition will prompt your next steps. For minor cases, you can proceed with home remedies that you have tried before. However, for serious ones, it is advised that you seek help from a health care provider.

Topical Ointments. There are ointments that can be bought over the counter. But if you consulted a doctor, use your prescription to buy the recommended medication. You can expect the doctor to prescribe creams that have zinc oxide included in the formulation. Creams like these can provide a protective layer for the rashes. There are also those that have antibacterial properties which will not only protect the rashes but also help treat them.

Clean the rashes. The importance of changing diapers or keeping the area clean as much as possible should not be forgotten. Even those areas that are not affected with the rashes should be kept clean.

Diapers should be changed regularly or whenever there is a need to do so. Prolonging the contact of wastes or ammonia in the urine with the skin will further aggravate its condition. Use mild soap or a recommended cleanser. Also, do this task with great care as the rashes can be painful when irritated.

Keep the area dry. After cleaning, you need to wipe excess moisture present in the area. Changing wet diapers as soon as possible is another potent solution.

Also, wait for a few minutes before reapplying the new diaper to allow for the skin to have time to dry.

Do not apply powder. Applying powder to the skin has been practiced by many. However, doing this will only create more harm than good. Powder may contribute to keeping the area dry, but it can clog the pores of the skin.

Another thing is that after some time, the powder can collect moisture and this will be more detrimental for the skin’s condition. Aside from powder, also avoid using petroleum jelly or cornstarch on the skin as the effects will be the same.

Sitz bath. This is a medically accepted procedure to help soothe the diaper rashes. A warm sitz bath can be done as suggested by your physician. It is usually done a couple of times in a day and for a duration of about 15 20 minutes. Since the bath wets the skin, make sure that you again pat it dry afterwards.

To completely avoid re occurrence of diaper rashes, even during the treatment stage, you already need to protect against the appearance of new ones. Keeping the area clean and dry will surely help.
