At last the daunting task of mowing your lawn is over as summer days are gone. However, taking care of our lawn shouldn’t stop us. Taking care of it in the fall and winter is almost the same as when taking care of it in the summer. Although the idea of mowing is removed from the things that need to be done, still there are lots of things to do to preserve the beauty of your lawn.

Here are some of the important things to do when taking care of your lawn in the fall and winter:

Watering your plant is as important as it was during the summer although this time you will water less or when needed. Unlike in the summer time where the sun is at its greatest, in the fall and winter you will need to water your lawn thoroughly but not as frequent as in the summer.

During the fall, always remove the falling leaves and don’t allow them to stay there for a long time as they will suffocate the grass. Fallen leaves usually kill the newly planted grass or the recovering grass as they get smothered by them. These can also attract all sorts of insects that will make your lawn their habitat. Make sure that you take the leaves off carefully and avoid doing any damage to the new grass blades as they are still sensitive during these times. If you are hesitant in using a rake for the fallen leaves, a blower is a good idea in carefully removing these leaves from your lawn.

Let your grass grow tall as this adds up in its line of defense during the cooler months and the winter season. In case mowing can’t be avoided, be sure that you don’t cut down too low to avoid damaging the roots of the grass.

Keep your children off the grass during these times as the newly sprout grass blades are still fragile during these times. Make sure that the new grass blades can grow without being stepped on to ensure their healthy growth without stressing them out.

During these times, nitrogen based fertilizers should be used in order to change the color of your grass and encourage its growth. You’ll rest assured that your lawn will be safe and protected all winter. Make sure that you follow the instruction properly and carefully use the fertilizer on your lawn. The proper time to use fertilizer is when the ground is moist as it easily absorbs and makes good use of the fertilizer.

Removing of the weeds in your lawn doesn’t stop in the summer as they continue to grow in the fall. Weed control should be done regularly or as much as possible in order to maintain your healthy lawn. If manual plucking seems to be a hard thing to do, there is always the option of using chemical treatments to remove these tough weeds from infesting your lawn. However, just like any other chemical, always be careful when using them as they can also be dangerous to humans.
