Reasons For When a Dentist Transfer You to Another Dentist

Many reasons can exist when a dentist transfer you to another dentist. Some will retire and need to make sure you are seen by another doctor. They can not leave you without a servicing dentist. Some are relocating and will need to make sure you have someone to see you. They will be responsible for making sure your dental records transfer smoothly.

The law states that all original charts and x rays are the property of your current provider. If you are being transferred, copies of all chart records and x rays must be provided to the new doctor. Each state has their own law for the length of time records must be kept. A provider can charge a fee that is within reason for any copies of chart notes and x rays. Almost all of them will do this at no charge if they are the one transferring you.

Some providers will need to transfer patients if there is a dental board action against that involves their license being suspended. Since all licensing data is on public record, a provider would find it in their best interest to inform their patients they must refer them out due to a temporary suspension. This can build trust with their patient to return to their practice if the suspension is lifted.

There are cases that happen where a conflict between the dentist and patient occurs. This can be a disagreement over their course of treatment. If a provider feels the patient will not follow through and it can be considered neglect on the doctors part, they have the right to transfer the patient out of the office. This can also happen with verbally abusive patients. It is in everyone s best interest to transfer them out of the office to find a provider they can work with.

Insurance problems can also cause a provider to refer a patient out. Patients can come in for free consultations and then find out their insurance is not accepted at the practice and need to be transferred. This happens with many HMO plans. These plans can mistakenly have a doctors name on the approved provider list and it will be a mistake. It is a good idea to verify anytime you make an appointment that your insurance is accepted.

If you are transferred out, make sure your records have been received by the new office prior to an appointment. You do not want to experience delays in your treatment or have to re schedule an appointment because your chart is not there.

For those with families, it is usually best to all transfer at one time. This allows the duplicating of charts and x rays to be pulled and completed at the same time. It can stop any delays of treatment. If one family member is being transferred out for a conflict issue, this can roll over to other members of the family. It can be best to start fresh at a new office.

Whether you are moving to a new provider by choice or the doctors choice, having your records and complete history can make your new office experience easier on you. Sometimes a new dentist can offer a fresh approach to your treatment.
