Homes, gardens and buildings everywhere come under constant attack from pests and bugs which just want to eat us out of house and home. Not only do they feed on what we drop on the floor, they also eat their way through wood structures which can damage the house quite severely. It is to this end then that termite companies may be needed to come in and sort out the matter. These creatures are probably the worst offenders when it comes to damaging the home. No matter what the house is made from, there has to be some wood in there somewhere. They need to feed on the cellulose in the wood and they will not distinguish between a tree in the garden, the roof rafters, or grannies rocking chair that has been in the family for a hundred years. All they want to do is eat and take food back to the queen in the colony some distance from the house. People often do not realize that they have this bug in the home until it is much too late. However, new builds will usually put in treatment when the foundations are going in. This lasts for about ten years or so but the time will come when more treatment will be necessary.
If it is the building itself which must be treated, holes are drilled in floors right down to the foundations and then chemicals poured in. The holes are sealed afterwards and this should see the end of the attacks. However, if there are quality floors in the home, this may not be advisable since tiles etc. will have to be damaged. In this instance, the garden may have to be dug up with deep trenches being dug in a complete circle around the home so that the chemicals can be disgorged here. Again, this is very disruptive but is absolutely necessary to keep these eating machines away.
New methods include sinking long tubes into the ground around the property in which poison bait is laid. The pests are attracted to this and will then take it back to the queen effectively killing off the whole colony. The good thing about this method is that they tubes stay in situ and are unobtrusive. They can be checked now and then for activity so this really is an ideal way to stay protected for longer.
Other pests which can get into the home include rodents, which carry all kinds of diseases, ants and cockroaches etc. which feed on anything left in the home. If anyone sees a roach the reaction is to think that the house is dirty. However, the roaches like a clean place with plenty of food on hand as well as dirty places so this is a misconception.
It is obvious that many of these pests need professional treatment. Indeed, some of the chemicals used are quite toxic so it may be better to leave this to those who know what they are doing.
