No matter what level of ball you are playing, you will need to practice. Baseball equipment comes in handy during practice, but if you are using tradition items, you will likely need someone to work with you. Practicing alone is tough. However, if you invest in a machine that can help you with practice, baseball instruction and perfecting your skills gets easier. Pitching machines are a big help when it comes to practicing alone or with others. The machines help players perfect their hitting skills and they can also help with fielding practice. Most machines come with a variety of features that allow players to adjust the type of pitch and the speed of the pitch. Some even throw softballs. This enables players of all skill levels and experience to practice the skills they need. Using a machine is easy, but it might take a little practice to get use to things.
Start by setting your machine to the most basic pitch it throws. Some machines only offer one type of pitch, but if yours offers a variety, choose a fastball. This means you will get a basic pitch, probably a strike, with little movement on the ball. Even if you are used to hitting more complicated pitches, this gives you a chance to get the feel for the ball coming at you from the machine.
Next, select the pitch speed. Though, it might be tempting to ramp it up to one of the faster speeds, start slowly. Your goal is not so much to practice hitting at this point, but to get used to how the machine feels throwing at you. Some machines can pitch balls more than 90 miles per hour, but you need to work your way up to facing pitches that fast from the machine. In general, you should always start a practice session with a slower pitch speed just to get loosened up and set your rhythm.
Hit a few balls and focus on your swing. The goal is not necessarily to hit the fastest, fanciest pitch from the machine. This is especially true if you are trying to work out a mechanical problem with your swing. Let the balls come at you easily and focus on the movement of your body. Do not try to hit too hard, either. Go for a good, solid swing and focus on changes in your swing and how it affects contact with the pitch.
Once you get a feel for hitting off of the machine, you can begin to make adjustments in your swing. As you sample different pitches, see what it feels like to drive the ball or keep the ball on the ground. Remember, the goal of the game is not always to aim for the fences. You need to be able to manage the pitches the best way possible and hitting a home run is not always going to be an option. A pitching machine gives you a chance to make adjustments in your swing based on the type of pitches you are facing.
