It is believed that taking children for guitar lessons early on can actually improve their cognitive and memory skills. Childhood is the easiest time to start learning an instrument because the brain is still developing and absorbs new information easily.

The great thing about having a music teacher is that you can give suggestions about the style of music that you would like to play. The instructor will provide you with music to learn that is appropriate to your skill level, but there is nothing wrong with asking for a focus on a specific genre.
It may be a good idea to actually seek out a teacher that specializes in the type of music that you want to learn to play. You could always learn from more than one teacher to expand your skills or if you would like to learn multiple genres. Each teacher will have different interests and will have a different teaching style.
When learning any instrument, it is easy to become discouraged. Becoming a good guitarist takes a lot of hard work and determination. If you ask any guitarist, they will tell you that they also experienced frustrating learning curves, so try not to get too down if you are struggling with a specific technique or piece of music.
No matter what method you choose for learning to play your instrument, remember that it takes a few months to learn to play the guitar, but years to become really good at it. Any lesson is only as good as the student, and his or her level of dedication and skill. It is important to practice as much as possible between one lesson and the next as well.
