The current administration is pushing hard for electric cars; they are aiming to have over one million electric autos on U.S streets in four years. It’s a great idea but is it really doable? One million EV’s is a lot and there are states that don’t even have any public charging stations at all. It looks like California is the best place to be if you want to drive an EV; California has over 400 charging stations. Other areas which are working hard on building them include the Bay Area and Portland in Oregon.

Electric cars like the Nissan Leaf are powered by a massive battery which needs to be recharged. Since the mileage range is around 100 miles before it needs a recharge it’s best suitable for people with shorter commutes. It can be recharged at home but that takes which is why many buyers opt to have a charging station installed at home.

Individuals who reside in apartment buildings or condos without a garage won’t be able to charge an EV. Not to mention the fact that some homes are multi unit without a garage. Home charging stations are best suited for home owners with access to a garage. Also required is an electrical system that enables 240 Volt charging.

The reason why electric cars haven’t taken off a ton yet is due to the lack of charging stations. A lot of prospective buyers have range anxiety; this means that they are worried that the battery might die out and they may end up stranded on the side of the road. The lack of charging stations is hindering many buyers from considering an EV. At this point in time many consumers may find hybrids more practical because they also utilize a traditional motor that kicks in when the electric one runs out of juice. A hybrid may be a better choice for someone who doesn’t have access to a garage in order to have a home charging station installed.

However, many companies are working together in order to find a solution to this problem. Renault Nissan Alliance group is currently working with federal agencies and electric companies in order to develop and build infrastructure that will be able allow a large number of people to drive EV’s. AeroVironment, a private company is in the process of developing multiple charging stations that would be able to charge an EV very rapidly. Building the proper network is an immense network and cooperation will be needed by numerous agencies and businesses in order to even try to make it work. Do Since charging may take a while, charging stations may appear at places such as work or shopping centers where people can do other things while they wait.

The American Automobile Association will also provide a mobile charging truck. If drivers get stranded on the road due to a dead battery, the truck will come by and charge their battery right up. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the “range anxiety” that many people have.
