If you have experienced being sprayed on by pepper spray, you will know how dreadful the feeling is. You are lucky if you weren t able to experience this. But it is imperative that you know how to react and know what you will do if you have been sprayed or accidentally sprayed on yourself.

There are a few things that can counteract or soothe the effect of pepper spray. However, it is also necessary that you take note of the additional things that you should do or should not do.

Do not rub the affected area. Remember that pepper spray causes inflammation of the skin or of membranes of the body. So, you expect to see redness in the contaminated area. Also, there will be pain, swelling, a sensation of warmth, and sometimes, you might not be able to freely move the body part. This can be seen in extremities exposed to the spray and are too painful.

Our common reaction immediately after being sprayed by the product is to rub the skin and sty to remove as much of the oil as you can. But, when you are going to do this, you will only be doing more harm than good.

When you are to rub your skin, the capillaries underneath will only be dilated. This will result in a more painful sensation.

Be careful not to spread the spray on other body parts. Again, avoid touching or worse, rubbing the area. Aside from the reason that is previously stated, touching the contaminated area will increase the risk of spreading the pepper spray oil to other parts of the body.

You do not want this to happen. For example, you were only sprayed in your hand. But if you touch other parts of your body with the hand that has the oil, you will have more pains to suffer from.

Milk is not only for kids. A home remedy that many have used throughout the years as an immediate solution to being sprayed is milk. You can either expose the affected part to flowing milk or submerge it. Pouring milk can be wasteful, so submerging is a more practical action to take.

Wash the area. Your common sense will tell you that you have to remove the oil. And, there is no better method of removing it than by washing with water. Water will be safe to use for the eyes as it is a sensitive part of the body. Of course, water alone will not remove it completely. Using detergent or body soap will be helpful in washing other body parts.

But, as you cannot rub the skin, you can start by making a solution of soap and water. You submerge the affected area, if possible, in this solution.

Look out for allergic reactions. The inflammatory reaction that the pepper spray oil can result in can be manifested by pain, swelling, etc. But in some individuals who are allergic to the oil can develop a serious allergic reaction. And this reaction is not just itching in the skin but an extreme sensitivity that can result in difficulty of breathing, fainting and eventually, death. So, you have to make sure that you act immediately when you were exposed to pepper spray oil.Cori N.
